Eugene Sue was a French novelist, considered to be one of a number of authors responsible for the popularisation of the serial novel, with this work and the series 'The Mysteries of Paris' published in this format. His works were strongly influenced by the upcoming notions of socialism, with this work 'The Wandering Jew' considered one of his 'anti-Catholic' works. Both works depict the life of the nobility in stark contrast to that of the underclasses of French society.
The work was also credited with helping to greatly increase circulation of the magazine in which it was published. A uniformly bound three volume set of this influential, and somewhat controversial work by noted French author Eugene Sue. Condition: In uniform half calf bindings with marbled boards.
